Free Tax Preparation in KC

Tax season has begun and we would like to pass along information to anyone in the Kansas City area that may be looking for FREE tax preparation services in the Metropolitan Kansas City area. Below are two such services that are available for qualifying taxpayers.

Next Step KC Free Tax Preparation

Next Step KC operates several IRS-sponsored Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) tax preparation sites in the Kansas City area. VITA offers free tax help to hard-working taxpayers with incomes of $53,000 and below who cannot prepare their own returns. If your total income is less than $60,000 (including spouses, if applicable), you qualify to have your federal and state returns prepared for free.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free, individualized tax preparation for low and moderate income taxpayers, especially those aged 60 and older. Find a location in the Kansas City area by visiting http://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide.

Need Assistance with a Tax Problem?

Free legal resources are available to help low-income families with tax-related problems from prior years. To qualify, income needs to be below $28,725 for individuals or under $58,875 for a family of four. Assistance can include help respond to IRS audits, establishing payment plans, and other options.

The Kansas City Tax Clinic is a project of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Graduate Tax Law Foundation and is staffed by UMKC tax law students under the supervision of experienced practitioners. The Kansas City Tax Clinic provides free, high quality representation to those who could not otherwise afford professional assistance.

The LITC at Legal Aid of Western Missouri provides free legal representation by experienced tax attorneys for low-income taxpayers in a 40-county area.

    Can you tell me whether the VITA tax preparers can help me if I sold and bought a house in 2015? I sold a house for $260,000 and bought one for $177,000. My total income for the year was $28,506 which is my social security and MO state retirement. Thank you.
